As the world increasingly embraces the importance of sustainability, the hotel and hospitality industry is taking significant steps to ensure visitors and guests can enjoy the comfort of a hotel stay, with sustainable luxury, without compromising their impact on the environment.

At the latest Tŷ Hotel venue in Newport, South Wales, the commitment to leading the way in sustainable practices, ensures that guests can experience the best in sustainable hotel stays, whether visiting for a work trip or leisure stay.

The importance of sustainable hotel practices

Hotels and sustainability are topics that are becoming increasingly linked. The hospitality and hotel industry, known for its extensive use of resources has significant environmental impacts, from energy consumption to water usage and waste generation.

The Celtic Collection range of hotels recognise the need for continuing innovation in adopting and leading the way in sustainable hotel practices. As the latest hotel in the portfolio, Tŷ Newport aims to be at the forefront of this movement, integrating eco-friendly measures into every aspect of its operations.

Eco-friendly hotel design

At Tŷ Newport, the design of the hotel is all focused around sustainable luxury for guests. From the use of sustainable building materials, to energy-efficient windows and insulation, every element has been carefully considered to minimise environmental impact.

The architectural design of the £20m hotel features a glass frontage covering all four floors, to maximise natural daylight and optimise guest experience and wellbeing, by creating a light and airy feel, while bedrooms enjoy floor to ceiling windows, reflecting the commitment to sustainability.

Outside the hotel, attractive planting and landscaping includes more than 1,200 trees and shrubs, enhancing the existing habitat for wildlife.

Energy efficiency

Energy consumption is a major concern for hotels. At Tŷ Newport hotel, they have set new sustainability standards designed to protect the environment, by being the largest all-electric hotel in Wales, sourcing its electricity from 100% REGO-backed renewable sources. Solar panels on the hotel roof create renewable electricity, which will contribute to approx. 20% of the hotels overall power.

The kitchen for the hotel’s CASA Kitchen & Bar restaurant, uses energy-efficient electric ovens and induction hobs, designed to reduce energy consumption by at least 50% compared to traditional gas-cooker methods.

The investment in state-of-the-art energy-efficient technologies also include low-energy LED lighting, both internally and externally to the hotel, with infra-red sensors in place, to adjust lighting levels, depending on use.

These combined initiatives help to significantly cut down on energy consumption, whilst still providing a comfortable and luxurious stay for guests.

Water conservation

Water conservation is another critical aspect of hotel sustainability efforts. Tŷ Newport Hotel have installed aerated shower heads and wash-basin taps to reduce water consumption. Guests are also encouraged to participate in the towel and linen reuse program, which helps to conserve water and reduce the use of cleaning chemicals.

The latest in air source heat pump technology creates hot water, plus a modern variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system delivers highly efficient, demand-based heating and cooling, and circulates fresh and filtered air around the hotel.

Waste reduction

Minimising waste is essential for any sustainable hotel, with comprehensive recycling programs throughout the hotel, ensuring that waste is properly sorted and recycled. As with all Celtic Collection hotels, zero waste is sent to landfill and all food waste is sent to anaerobic digestion to create renewable energy. Another great help to the environment.

Green meetings and events

For guests looking to host meetings or events, green-meeting packages that incorporate sustainable practices are available across The Celtic Collection range of hotels. From eco-friendly catering options to energy-efficient AV equipment, every aspect of the event is designed to minimise environmental impact. Sustainable meeting spaces at the neighbouring ICC Wales and Celtic Manor Resort provide beautiful and inspiring settings for any occasion.
